Memphis Gets Close Win Over Southern Miss, 60-58

On January 11th in hostile territory, the Golden Eagles were edged by the Tigers, 60-58, in conference action.

It was a close game, closer than it probably should have been, based on the talent level of the teams. The Golden Eagles are usually pretty good playing on the road, but the Tigers came in strong, having won 4 of their last 5. Last year, Southern Miss was 0-3 against Memphis. Over the last four seasons, the Golden Eagles have gone 0-11 against the Tigers including 0-2 at FedEx Forum. Since 1980, the Southern Miss record against Memphis is 17-45.

Southern Miss was topped in both three-point shooting and defensive rebounding.

Memphis got many more defensive rebounds which created more possession opportunities, 30 to 25. Memphis shot a game-critical 40% in threes as Southern Miss managed 28%.

LaShay Page was a bright spot against the Tigers with 16 points on 42% shooting in 35 minutes, including 12 points coming from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Golden Eagles are now 15-3. With their record falling to 2-1 in the C-USA, they move into 5th place. Their record against RPI Top 50 teams (Memphis #34) falls to 2-3.
