Southern Miss Tops Tulane in Overtime, 71-66

On January 7th on the road, the Golden Eagles escaped the Green Wave, 71-66, in overtime.

A couple items of note about these two teams: Southern Miss had a big advantage in RPI ranking (#22 to #191). The Golden Eagles are playing great on the road, and this win bumps that record to 5-1. A year ago Southern Miss went 2-0 against Tulane. Over the last four years, the Golden Eagles are now 9-1 against the Green Wave including 4-0 at Fogelman Arena. Since 1980, Southern Miss is on top, 29-28.

Southern Miss gained a strong statistical advantage in offensive rebounding and also topped Tulane in turnover margin.

Southern Miss hit the glass harder than Tulane, 14 offensive rebounds to eight, and that led to more second-chance shots. The Golden Eagles only gave the ball away 13 times compared to 16 for the Green Wave.

Neil Watson was the high scorer for the Golden Eagles with 16 points on 40% shooting in 36 minutes. Watson also helped the cause by topping everyone with five assists.
